Brachytherapy: pros & cons

Advantages
  • One treatment session
    (multiple treatments avoided)

  • Treatment does not significantly disrupt daily activities

  • Is performed as out patient procedure with minimal post-procedure discomfort

  • Compared with prostatectomy it requires only a minor surgical procedure

  • Available in most provinces in Canada
Disadvantages
  • Patients must be selected according to Clinical Stage, PSA and Gleason score
    Requires minor surgical procedure
  • Failures cannot be treated with surgery
  • Side effects of brachytherapy:
    Proctitis* (1%)
    *inflammation of the lower rectum
    Impotence (15-30%)
    Urinary urgency (1-4months)
  • The prostate is not removed
    Possibility of tumor regrowth
  • Not as readily available as other treatments
