Your appointment will be scheduled either by your doctor or a urologist. The hospital requires results of both your digital rectal exam and PSA test before your visit.
A trans rectal ultrasound (TRUS) requires a clean rectum. You will need to purchase a Fleet Enema from your drug store (no prescription is necessary). Use the enema at home on the morning of your procedure. Please ask your pharmacist for any assistance.
Do not take any aspirin or arthritis medicine for 10 days prior to biopsy (although Tylenol is safe to take). You will be given a prescription for antibiotics by your doctor. Take the first dose the night before the biopsy and the second dose in the morning before the biopsy. The remaining tablets are taken afterward. If you have heart valve disease or are taking anticoagulants (Coumadin, Warfarin or any blood thinning medicine) special precautions must be taken before biopsy. Please notify your doctor before coming to the test.
Ultrasound staff will explain the biopsy procedure to obtain your consent before the biopsy.
Don't forget to bring your health card and your hospital card to your appointment! |
The biopsy will take only a few minutes, during which time you'll be asked to lie on your side in a fetal crouch position.
You will be asked to sit in a locker room for 5 minutes, and then wait one hour in the hospital to make sure that you are feeling well.
It is common and normal to see a small amount of bleeding in the urine stool or sperm (ejaculate) after the biopsy. This can last up to 6 weeks.
After your biopsy there are no restrictions to diet or sexual activity. Avoid heavy physical activity for at least 24 hours.
It is unusual to have any trouble after the biopsy, but if you develop a fever, increasing pain or any other problem which concerns you, please call your doctor or go to the local hospital emergency department.
Your tissue samples taken at biopsy will be examined under a microscope by a pathologist to see if cancer is present. The results will be sent to your doctor in about 2 weeks time. |
