Radiation: preparation

Once it has been decided to treat your cancer with radiation therapy, a number of procedures have to be followed to design your treatment program.

The first step is to outline precisely the area to be treated. The radiation therapist does this with the help of a planning CT scan. In addition, an “Alpha Cradle” may be made for you prior to treatment. This device moulds to the shape of your body enabling you to remain still during treatment.

The prostate moves naturally within your pelvis depending on how full or empty your bladder and rectum are. We try to reduce the movement by having you follow a daily routine of filling the bladder and emptying the rectum. You will be asked to come for a simulation appointment (no radiation is given) before treatment begins. If all checks out, the plan is approved and you may begin treatment.
