Radiation: pros & cons

Advantages
  • Suitable treatment for anyone
    (no selection criteria)

  • No hospitalization is required

  • Many centres of excellence

  • Less risk associated with radiation than with surgery

  • Treatment does not significantly disrupt daily activities

  • Outcomes relatively predictable
Disadvantages
  • Treatment program is prolonged
    (approx. 35 sessions) and daily transportation may be a problem

  • Only 9 facilities in Ontario offer radiation therapy

  • Side effects of radiation:
    - Impotence (50%)
    - Urinary frequency & urgency (1-5%)
    - Rectal bleeding (5-10%)

  • The prostate is not removed
    (possibility of tumor regrowth)

  • Failures cannot be treated with surgery
